There have been reports of people queuing to get into supermarkets from early this morning as more restrictions were placed on people and freight entering the UK reported to affect stocks of fresh food in the run up to Christmas Day.
France Transport minister Jean-Baptiste Djebbari has said to Sky News that the country is working on a plan to “ensure that movement from the UK can resume”
UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has also moved to reassure consumers they will not notice any supermarket shortages saying: ‘The supply chain is pretty robust in as much as you get variations in supply all the time. For the most part, people won’t notice it.’
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson has also confirmed that there will be no shortage of traditional Christmas dinner items saying: “All products for the Great British Christmas lunch are already in the country and we have plenty of these.
“We are also sourcing everything we can from the UK and looking into alternative transport for product sourced from Europe.”
