NHS Urges Self-Care to Ease Pressure Amid Flu Surge

NHS leaders say the health service in Bath, North East Somerset, Swindon, and Wiltshire is experiencing increased strain as calls for help with common winter illnesses, such as flu, soar following the Christmas period.

Healthcare services, including NHS 111, GP practices, and the region’s ambulance service, have reported a rise in patients seeking advice for flu-like symptoms. This influx is impacting the ability of frontline teams to prioritise patients requiring urgent care.

Connie Timmins, Lead Nurse for Infection Prevention and Control at the Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon, and Wiltshire Integrated Care Board, has encouraged residents to consider self-care for managing minor ailments at home.

Your Holiday Starts Now

“Flu, coughs, colds, and sore throats are expected at this time of year, and the best remedies are often resting, staying hydrated, and using over-the-counter medicines like paracetamol and ibuprofen,” said Ms Timmins.

With antibiotics proving ineffective against viral infections such as flu, the NHS is advising people to avoid unnecessary GP appointments and instead use NHS 111 online for non-urgent guidance.

Pharmacies across the region are now fully operational following the Christmas bank holidays, offering support and advice for common conditions. Medication for illnesses like sinusitis, urine infections, and shingles can now be prescribed directly by pharmacists, reducing the need for GP consultations.

Ms Timmins also urged anyone planning New Year celebrations to reconsider attending events if they feel unwell, particularly with symptoms of flu or norovirus. “Welcoming 2025 from the comfort of home is the best way to protect yourself and others,” she added.

For those with serious symptoms such as chest pain, heavy bleeding, or broken bones, emergency services remain the appropriate course of action.
