New Specialist Bungalows in Walcot to Provide Vital Accommodation for Families in Need

Work has started on the construction of three adaptable bungalows in Walcot, marking a significant step towards providing essential housing for families in need.

Situated on an unused plot of land owned by Swindon Borough Council in Ashley Close, these three-bedroom homes are designed with specific adaptations for those with disabilities or care-dependent family members.

Partially funded through a blend of Section 106 developer contributions and Right to Buy receipts, these new bungalows will feature level access, off-road parking, fully adapted wet rooms and kitchens, and will be wheelchair accessible throughout in a bid to offer a better quality of life to families requiring such specialised accommodations.

The homes, being built by R J Leighfield & Sons Ltd on behalf of the Council, will be allocated via the Council’s Housing Register. Priority will be given to families with complex physical health needs, ensuring that the properties meet their requirements both now and in the future.

Energy efficiency is also at the forefront of this project with the properties expected to be rated ‘A’ for energy efficiency, featuring air source heat pumps, solar panels, and mechanical ventilation heat recovery systems (MVHR). These measures not only align with Swindon’s climate change ambitions but also help in keeping energy costs down for the residents.

Councillor Janine Howarth, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, expressed her satisfaction with the development: “We have a real shortage of adaptable homes for families in Swindon, so I am really pleased we are building these three new properties. When built, these bungalows will transform the lives of the people they have been designed to support and will be a great example of how we want to Build a Fairer Swindon as outlined in our three missions.

“The houses will also deliver on our ambitions to tackle climate change being incredibly energy efficient and boasting solar panels, air source heat pumps and mechanical ventilation technology, which is not only great for the environment but will keep energy costs down for the families who live there. I look forward to seeing the completed scheme at the end of the year.”

This development stands as a testament to Swindon Borough Council’s commitment to providing suitable housing solutions while also addressing environmental sustainability.
