The skyline at New College Swindon’s North Star Campus has taken a bold new step forward, as construction partner Stepnell marks the completion of a major structural phase on a modern Welcome Hub set to unify the site’s key technical and vocational buildings.
The reinforced concrete base and external steelwork now stand tall between the Lyra and Phoenix blocks, paving the way for a striking communal space that aims to improve student flow, accessibility, and on-campus services. Due to open in August, the new two-storey structure will offer a central reception, offices, welfare amenities, a multi-faith room, and upstairs meeting spaces – all designed to streamline the college experience for both staff and students.

Stepnell, brought on board via the Procure Partnerships Framework (PPF), is delivering the project with a clear vision – not only to enhance physical infrastructure but to support practical learning and career preparation.
Rob Speirs, regional director at Stepnell, commented:
“We’ve ensured the new Welcome Hub complements existing buildings while also providing a fresh, functional environment tailored to support students and staff. But it’s not just about bricks and mortar – it’s about real-world experience too.”
Indeed, this is where the partnership between Stepnell and the college goes well beyond traditional construction. More than 120 students studying everything from bricklaying to plumbing have already visited the live site, gaining valuable hands-on insight into the industry.
This summer will see the launch of a 13-week extended work experience and careers support initiative, allowing learners to spend time on site under the supervision of skilled tradespeople, further reinforcing their classroom studies with genuine workplace exposure.
Matt Butcher, vice principal of commercial skills and partnerships at New College Swindon, was full of praise for the collaboration:
“Practical experience is vital in our teaching, and Stepnell have gone above and beyond to create opportunities for our students to get involved. It’s brilliant to see the construction sector actively supporting the next generation.”
The project also includes plans for landscaped external areas and a dedicated drop-off zone to ease traffic and enhance the visual appeal of the North Star Campus.
As the August opening edges closer, it’s clear that this development is about more than new walls – it’s about building futures.
