Multi-Million Pound Youth Centre Project Underway in Swindon

Swindon is set to benefit from a new youth centre that promises to offer a wide range of activities and support services for local children and teenagers. Located at the Lyndhurst Centre in Park North, the facility will cater to over 400 young people weekly, providing skill development, counselling, education, and recreation opportunities.

The £3.8 million project, funded by the Government’s Youth Investment Fund, is expected to open its doors in spring 2025. Swindon Borough Council is behind the inclusive facility, which will offer services to children aged 11-16, with extended access for those up to 25 with disabilities. The youth centre is part of the Council’s broader strategy to create a fairer Swindon, in line with its corporate plan.

Councillor Paul Dixon, Cabinet Member for Children’s Social Care, spoke enthusiastically about the project: “This is a really exciting project, and I am so pleased we have begun work to transform this empty building into a fantastic facility for children in Swindon. Ensuring no one is left behind and equipping young people with the skills and opportunities to have a bright start in life is what building a fairer Swindon is all about.”

The centre will feature a variety of facilities, including a hair and beauty hub, teaching kitchens, music booths, a gym, counselling spaces, and an alternative education area. These services are being developed in partnership with local organisations such as SMASH Youth Project, STEP Swindon, and WAY.

The youth of Swindon have played a crucial role in shaping the centre. Local teenagers have been consulted on the kinds of activities they want and will continue to have a say in its management once it opens. Toby, a 17-year-old Young Changemaker from WAY, said, “For too long, others have decided what’s best for us young people. Now it’s our turn.” Another Young Changemaker, 16-year-old Xavdryn, added, “It’s going to be amazing for young people as there aren’t many spaces currently that are made for young people, by young people.”

The Lyndhurst Centre will be open from 8am to 10pm, offering accessible services for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and creating opportunities for young people to engage with local training and employment opportunities in the borough.

Work on the building is being carried out by local contractor RJ Leighfield, with the project expected to be complete by March 2025.
