More new homes are set to be built in Malmesbury after plans were approved for an extension to the Backbridge Farm development. Persimmon Homes Wessex has been given the green light to build 21 additional properties in the area, bringing much-needed housing to the Wiltshire town.
The new homes, located at Punters Farm, will be zero carbon-ready, featuring air source heat pumps and electric vehicle charging points. This development is designed to complement the existing Backbridge Farm site, providing a natural expansion with improved infrastructure and green spaces.
A key element of the project is its commitment to sustainability and the local environment. The plans include biodiversity net gain measures, tree and hedge retention, animal boxes, refugia, and the creation of new footpaths. Additionally, Persimmon Homes will make financial contributions to the community through the Section 106 agreement.
Of the 21 new homes, eight will be allocated to a local affordable housing association, ensuring more people in Malmesbury have access to quality housing. As part of the agreement, new vehicular access for the local tennis club will also be constructed, supporting its expansion and accessibility.
The development aligns with the Malmesbury Neighbourhood Plan, which was the first in Wiltshire to be officially adopted in 2015. The location of Punters Farm means residents will benefit from the wider infrastructure improvements at Backbridge Farm, including a village green, play areas, pocket parks, and a new footbridge linking the development to the town.
Persimmon Homes has a strong presence in Malmesbury, with its Wessex division based locally. The developer has also supported the community through its Community Champions scheme, making donations to Malmesbury Town Carnival, Malmesbury Victoria FC, and Wiltshire Air Ambulance.
Seb Spiller, Deputy Managing Director of Persimmon Homes Wessex, commented: “We’re delighted to have secured permission to bring more homes to Malmesbury at Punters Farm, complementing our existing development at Backbridge Farm. Our commitment to the town is clear, not just through the homes we build but also through our investment in community facilities and local organisations.”
Construction is expected to begin soon, with efforts in place to minimise disruption while delivering much-needed housing for the area.
