Councillor Imtiyaz Shaikh, the Mayor of Swindon, recently donned a hard hat to mark the beginning of construction on a new retirement community at Peglars Way, Wichelstowe.
The new development, spearheaded by McCarthy Stone, aims to address the rising demand for specialist retirement housing. This initiative not only caters to the growing needs of retirees but also helps free up larger homes for first-time buyers and families, thus easing the property ladder for many.
At the ground-breaking ceremony, Councillor Shaikh joined Senior Site Manager Gareth Lewis to discuss how McCarthy Stone’s project will enhance retirement living options in Wichelstowe. After making a few remarks, the Mayor laid one of the first bricks to signify the commencement of work.
The Retirement Living complex will feature a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments designed specifically for those aged over 60. These homes will offer a range of amenities including communal lounges and garden spaces, fostering a vibrant community atmosphere. Prospective buyers will be able to secure their homes off-plan starting from Spring 2025, with the first residents expected to move in by Summer 2025.
Councillor Shaikh commented, “The need for more specialist retirement accommodation is urgent, not just in Wichelstowe but nationwide. McCarthy Stone is playing a crucial role in meeting this demand and ensuring that people can enjoy independent living well into their later years. It’s an exciting development for Wichelstowe, and I look forward to seeing it take shape.”
Verity McKay, Divisional Marketing Manager at McCarthy Stone, added, “We were delighted to welcome Councillor Shaikh to our new site. McCarthy Stone is committed to addressing the shortage of suitable housing for older people by creating homes that enhance their retirement experience. We’re eager to share more about this development and the lifestyle it will offer.”
The new development will comprise 44 stylish one and two-bedroom apartments, located adjacent to the scenic Wilts and Berks Canal. Many of these properties will offer delightful views over the water. Residents will benefit from close proximity to local amenities, including a Waitrose supermarket, Hall and Woodhouse pub, and a variety of shops and restaurants. The location also provides access to over 200 acres of open space and 12 kilometres of walkways and cycle paths.
McCarthy Stone, which consistently receives the Five Star award for customer satisfaction from the Home Builders Federation, is noted for its high standards. The company is the only UK housebuilder to achieve this rating every year it has participated in the survey.
