Marco Pierre White Makes Surprise Appearance at Swindon Student Chef Showdown

Budding chefs at Swindon’s New College were treated to a surprise of Michelin-starred proportions as culinary legend Marco Pierre White dropped in on the 14th Annual Student Chef Competition this month.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Swindon North and Thamesdown and hosted by the College’s Catering Department, the competition served up more than just top-tier cooking — it brought with it a memorable moment for eleven Level 3 catering students, many of whom are poised to begin their careers in the hospitality industry.

This annual culinary challenge has become a cornerstone in the local education calendar, giving students the chance to test their skills under pressure by preparing a three-course meal — the catch being that their starter had to be entirely plant-based. Judging the competition was a panel of four experienced industry professionals, including development chefs from the College’s trusted suppliers and representatives from Wadworth’s Brewery, alongside Rotary Club President Steve Davison and Treasurer Chris Ockwell.

But it was the unannounced arrival of Marco Pierre White — a man often described as the original ‘bad boy’ of British cooking — that sent ripples of excitement through the training kitchen. The revered chef not only tasted the students’ efforts but took the time to chat with them, offering pearls of wisdom that will no doubt stay with them for years to come.

Speaking after the event, College staff and organisers praised the standard of entries this year, with the judges facing the difficult task of narrowing down the winners. Eventually, three students were awarded top-of-the-range chefs’ knives and sharpeners for their impressive performances:

1st Place: Godfrey De Andrade

2nd Place: Sara Williamson

3rd Place: Theo Bignold

The event was a proud showcase of the College’s commitment to nurturing future talent and a glowing example of how local initiatives can shine a national spotlight on young people’s skills and ambitions.

Marco Pierre White’s unexpected attendance was the icing on the cake – an unforgettable experience that left both the students and the wider catering team beaming with pride.
