Fareed Tariq, aged 43, of Barnum Court, Swindon, has been handed a 13-year prison sentence at Swindon Crown Court today, following his trial conviction for rape in February.
The distressing incident unfolded on Friday, April 14th, 2023, when the victim, accompanied by friends, found herself stranded in Swindon town centre during the early hours of Saturday morning. After an unsuccessful attempt to hail a taxi, she unwittingly boarded Tariq’s vehicle, believing it to be the arranged transport. However, instead of ensuring her safe passage, Tariq deceitfully drove her to a secluded spot in Pinehurst, where he subjected her to a harrowing assault.
In response to his reprehensible actions, Tariq has been sentenced to a prison sentence of 13 years, with the stipulation that he must serve at least two-thirds of the sentence. Additionally, he faces an additional five-year period under license upon release. Furthermore, Tariq has been placed on the sex offenders register for life and has been issued a lifelong restraining order against the victim.
James Purcell, Investigator of the Major Crime Team, condemned Tariq’s predatory behaviour, particularly highlighting the vulnerability of the victim. Purcell commended the victim for her unwavering courage in reporting the incident and enduring the arduous trial process, underscoring her pivotal role in securing justice.
This distressing episode marks the second instance of Tariq’s conviction for rape following a similar offence in 2012, for which he served a six-year prison sentence.
Purcell reiterated the importance of reporting such crimes, assuring survivors that they need not suffer alone. He encouraged victims to reach out to the police or local sexual assault referral centres for confidential assistance and support.
For those who have experienced sexual assault or rape, assistance and guidance can be sought through Wiltshire Police’s website or by contacting emergency services on 101 or 999.
