A man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison following the manslaughter of a 27-year-old man in Swindon.
Erdogan Erdogan, 32, of Manchester Road, was sentenced at Bristol Crown Court today (23 January) after being found guilty of manslaughter following a two-week trial.
The court heard how, shortly after 5am on 2 July last year, police were alerted to a seriously injured man on Manchester Road by a passing cyclist.
Officers and paramedics attended the scene, but despite their efforts, Fatih Zengi, 27, sadly died as a result of his injuries. Mr Zengi was a former flatmate of the defendant.
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker, who led the investigation, said the case represented a tragic loss of life.
“This is a tragic case where a young life has been senselessly lost,” he said.
“I would like to offer my condolences to the family and friends of Fatih and praise them for their dignity throughout this investigation.
“I would also like to extend my thanks to the Turkish community in Swindon for their support. Without this, we would not have achieved the verdict returned by the court.”
DCI Walker described Mr Zengi as a hard-working young man who was dedicated to supporting his wider family in Turkey and was well thought of within the local community.
“His death has been devastating for all who knew him,” he added. “I hope that the guilty verdict and today’s prison sentence will provide some comfort to those who loved and knew Fatih.”
