Manchester City and Chelsea are set to quit the controversial European Super League in a crucial blow for the proposed new competition, only announced on Sunday.
Chelsea and City were two of 6 leading English football clubs to sign up to the breakaway league of 12 clubs on Sunday.
Earlier this evening Manchester City said in a statement that it has “formally enacted the procedures to withdraw from the group developing plans for a European Super League”.
Chelsea are expected to follow suit after fans protested in the streets outside the clubs ground.
Spanish clubs Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are also expected to pull out in the next 24 hours.
