It is often said that the wheels of justice can grind slowly, but when they finally turn, they can do so with considerable weight. That will no doubt be felt today as a man charged with a shocking catalogue of child sexual offences is due to appear before Swindon Magistrates Court.
Thirty-eight-year-old Mark South, a Jamaican national currently living in Ashford, Kent, has been charged with 38 offences, the result of an extensive Wiltshire Police investigation that has stretched back several years. The charges relate to alleged offending between January 2021 and December 2024, involving nine victims.
The list of allegations is deeply troubling, including four counts of rape, creating and distributing indecent images, blackmail, sexual communication with a child, and a number of offences involving causing or inciting children to take part in sexual activity or prostitution.
Police have said little beyond the bare facts, which is understandable given the seriousness of the case and the need to protect victims. What is clear, however, is that this investigation has required painstaking work from specialist officers over a long period, drawing together evidence and engaging with multiple affected families.
South is set to appear in court today (3 December), where proceedings will begin to move into the public arena. As always, the justice system must be allowed space to work through the evidence, but the scale of the charges alone is enough to send a chill through any local parent.
