A man has been arrested following a serious incident on the M4 which saw one vehicle overturned and prompted a large police response.
Wiltshire Police were called shortly after 9pm on Monday night (22 December) after multiple reports of a Range Rover Evoque being driven dangerously on the motorway. The vehicle was later involved in a collision with another car between Membury Services and Junction 15, causing the second vehicle to flip onto its roof.
The driver of the Range Rover left the scene on foot, prompting further calls to police from motorists who reported a man walking along the hard shoulder towards Junction 15.
Officers from Wiltshire Police’s Roads Policing Unit coordinated with Armed Response officers and the dog team to locate the suspect. With the assistance of Police Dog Conan, the man was tracked from the collision site and arrested a short time later.
The 42-year-old was arrested on suspicion of drink driving, drug driving, driving while disqualified, failing to stop after a road traffic collision, and being a pedestrian on a motorway carriageway.
He was taken to hospital as a precaution and has since been released on police bail while enquiries continue.
The incident comes during Operation Limit, a month-long Roads Policing Unit initiative aimed at tackling drink and drug driving across Wiltshire during the festive period.
Wiltshire Police have reiterated that impaired driving will not be tolerated and are urging members of the public to report concerns immediately.
Anyone who suspects a driver may be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or driving dangerously, is advised to call 999 when it is safe to do so.
