Man admits 49 child sexual offences after Wiltshire Police investigation

A man has pleaded guilty to 49 child sexual offences following a major investigation which began after Wiltshire Police received information from a safeguarding officer at a Swindon school.

Mark South, 38, a Jamaican national from Ashford, Kent, appeared at Winchester Crown Court on Tuesday, 1 September, where he had been due to stand trial.

Instead, he pleaded guilty to 49 offences, including engaging in sexual activity with a child, taking and distributing indecent images of children, blackmail, engaging in sexual communication with a child and offences relating to the sexual exploitation of children.

The investigation began in May 2023 after Wiltshire Police was alerted to concerns by a safeguarding officer at a school in Swindon.

A complex investigation by Wiltshire Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team uncovered evidence of offending involving children across the country, with victims identified in areas stretching from Essex to Cornwall.

Police said South used a number of social media platforms and multiple aliases to contact young girls and arrange sexual encounters in exchange for money and other items.

Detective Constable Geoff Newnham, of the Major Crime Investigation Team, said South had used social media aliases, burner phones and prepaid numbers in an attempt to conceal his activities.

He said the investigation had involved specialist child abuse investigators, major crime detectives, digital forensic experts, victim identification officers and prosecutors from the Organised Child Sexual Abuse Unit.

DC Newnham also paid tribute to the victims, witnesses and their families for their patience and resilience during the lengthy investigation.

“It is thanks to the extraordinary courage of the victims that justice has been achieved,” he said.

He added that South’s guilty pleas meant victims would not now have to give evidence at a trial and relive their experiences.

DC Newnham said the case should also send a message to people experiencing abuse that they would be listened to and supported, while warning offenders that they could not rely on anonymity online to avoid detection.

South is due to be sentenced at Winchester Crown Court on 14 and 15 December.
