Making a splash: pop-up pool opens for school swimming lessons in Swindon

A Swindon primary school is diving into an exciting new initiative this term, with a pop-up swimming pool now open on site to help pupils build confidence in the water.

Gorse Hill Primary School, part of The White Horse Federation, has welcomed the temporary pool onto its grounds, giving children from Reception through to Year 6 the chance to take part in swimming lessons without leaving the school site.

The pool will remain in place for six weeks and has been introduced to support both curriculum learning and essential life skills. Alongside lessons for pupils, the school is also offering family swim sessions on Friday afternoons, as well as ladies-only swimming sessions on Friday mornings, widening access for the local community.

Swimming is a compulsory part of the national curriculum, with schools required to teach pupils to swim confidently over a distance of at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes, and learn safe self-rescue techniques in water-based situations. By hosting the pool on site, Gorse Hill aims to remove barriers that can sometimes limit children’s access to swimming lessons.

Headteacher Candida Hutchinson said the arrival of the pool was a proud moment for the school.

She said: “We are delighted to offer this incredible facility to our pupils. Swimming is such an important skill, and having our own pool means every child can learn in a familiar, supportive setting. We can’t wait to see the joy and confidence this brings to our school community.

“Here’s to many splashes, smiles and successes in the pool.”

Dr Dan Nicholls, Chief Executive Officer of The White Horse Federation, praised the initiative and the teamwork behind it.

He said: “This is a great example of schools and communities working together to create opportunities for all. It helps ensure access to experiences that some children may not otherwise have, and it reflects the dedication of our staff and Trust partners who continue to enrich young lives.”
