M4 Closure: Serious Incident Prompts Overnight Shutdown Between Hungerford and Swindon

The M4 motorway has been closed following a serious incident at approximately 9:46 pm yesterday evening.

Both carriageways between Junction 14 at Hungerford and Junction 15 at Swindon have been affected by the closure.

Thames Valley Police is leading a multi-agency response to the ongoing incident, with all emergency services currently at the scene.

National Highways originally said that, “due to the serious nature of the incident,” the road is expected to remain closed throughout the night.”

This has since been updated and “due to the serious nature of the incident the road is expected to remain closed through the morning to facilitate the ongoing police collision investigations.”

Diversion Routes:

Eastbound:

  • Exit the M4 at J15 and, at the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto the A419.
  • Continue to the next roundabout, take the 4th exit, and join the B4192.
  • Follow the B4192 for approximately 13 miles, bypassing Hungerford town centre.
  • At the junction of B4192 with Charnham Park, turn left and continue to the A4 roundabout.
  • Take the 1st exit and, at the next roundabout, join the A338.
  • Follow the A338 for approximately 3 miles to M4 J14 and rejoin the M4 eastbound.

Westbound:

  • Leave the M4 at J14 and, at the roundabout, take the first exit onto the A338.
  • Follow the A338 for approximately 3 miles.
  • At the A4 mini roundabout, turn right onto the A4 towards Hungerford, avoiding the town centre.
  • After a short distance to the next roundabout, take the 2nd exit into Charnham Park.
  • Turn right onto the B4192 and follow for approximately 13 miles through Aldbourne to the A419 roundabout.
  • Take the first exit and join the A419, continue to rejoin the M4 westbound at J15.

Motorists are strongly advised to follow the diversion routes indicated by the hollow black circle or square diversion symbols on local road signs to ensure smooth traffic flow and avoid delays.
