For the past 15 years, runners and walkers of all abilities have been gathering at Lydiard Park to take part in its parkrun event. Since becoming the first parkrun in the South West in 2010, the park has welcomed thousands of participants—ranging from seasoned athletes to casual walkers, Santas, and those donning colourful costumes—all looking to keep fit or simply enjoy the camaraderie.
The free event, part of the national parkrun initiative, has grown in popularity, with hundreds of volunteers giving up their time each week to ensure it runs smoothly. This Saturday (9am on 1 March), Lydiard Park will celebrate its 15th anniversary, with organisers inviting runners and walkers of all abilities to join in the festivities.

Over the years, Swindon Borough Council staff and councillors have played an active role in supporting the event. One of them, Emma Sperring, a Public Health Practitioner at the Council and the organiser of Lydiard Park’s parkrun, reflected on its journey.
“I’ve been volunteering at Lydiard parkrun for 15 years now and what an amazing experience it has been. I still remember that first event back in March 2010, when we had just 30 runners and eight volunteers. Now we regularly see around 400 walkers and runners and approximately 50 volunteers each week, which shows how much it has grown.
“Fifteen years ago, it was just a run in the park. Now, it’s about being with like-minded people, catching up on the week, welcoming new faces—including visitors to Swindon—and celebrating milestones, birthdays, and anniversaries. It’s also about appreciating the beauty of Lydiard Park and the wellbeing benefits of being outdoors.
“I volunteer for all these reasons and more! The parkrun community has become like an extended family to me. I love seeing familiar faces each week, but I also enjoy meeting new people who quickly become part of our group.
“If you’ve never experienced parkrun before, please give it a go. You’ll be welcomed with open arms, whether you choose to walk, jog, run, volunteer, cheer others on, or simply take in the atmosphere.”
Councillor Emma Bushell, Deputy Leader of Swindon Borough Council, shared her enthusiasm for the event, saying: “parkrun is a fantastic way for people to get active, socialise, and volunteer.
“Lydiard parkrun holds a special place in my heart as it was the first parkrun I ever did—and my first organised race event—shortly after I took up running 10 years ago. Since then, I’ve taken part in parkruns in Swindon and beyond, though I don’t get to do them as often as I’d like due to council commitments. I’m really looking forward to taking part in the 15th anniversary run.
“I’m proud that Swindon was home to the first parkrun in the South West and now supports two weekly parkruns, in addition to junior parkruns. The event has built such a strong community, and for many, it’s a highlight of their week. If you’ve ever thought about joining in but haven’t yet, I’d highly recommend it.”
Alongside the Lydiard Park event, Seven Fields in Penhill also hosts a weekly parkrun, while junior parkruns take place at Lydiard Park on Sundays at 9am, with plans for a new junior event in Swindon soon.
Those interested in taking part this weekend, or any future weekends, can sign up via the parkrun website. Anyone interested in volunteering can email the team to find out more.
