Longleat’s Hippos Set to Make a Comeback This Summer with New 21st Century Home

Longleat has received planning approval for an ambitious new project that will bring hippos back to the Safari Park this summer. Construction is set to begin on Monday, 10th February, with the aim of having the iconic creatures return to Half Mile Pond by the side of Longleat House.

For nearly 50 years, Longleat was home to two famous female hippos, Sonia and Spot, who became beloved figures at the park. Following their deaths in 2023 and early 2024, many visitors have been eagerly awaiting the return of the species.

Longleat’s management team has now unveiled plans to introduce a new pod, including both males and females, creating a self-sustaining family group, or bloat, within the park’s updated facilities.

The new plans, which were submitted to Wiltshire County Council in November, include the construction of a state-of-the-art hippo house on the existing site. The development also incorporates improvements to the grazing paddock and Half Mile Pond, ensuring a comfortable and expansive space for the hippos. Key features of the project will include indoor pools for the hippos, a classroom for educational talks, behind-the-scenes tours, and group visits.

David Leverett, Longleat’s Development Director, expressed his excitement over the approval. “We’re thrilled that the local authority has given the go-ahead for our plans, and we’re looking forward to welcoming hippos back by early summer. Our guests cherished seeing Sonia and Spot, and many have requested their return. This development will also include a new pontoon for our sea lions, ensuring they remain visible to guests enjoying the Jungle Cruise.”

The project is not just about bringing back the hippos; it’s also part of Longleat’s ongoing commitment to conservation. The new meadow area will promote biodiversity, while the relocation of the sea lions will still allow visitors to watch them being fed. Longleat’s Chief Operating Officer, Simon Askew, added, “This will enhance our conservation efforts and further cement Longleat’s position as a leader in breeding vulnerable species.”

The hippos will have access to the largest free-range water habitat for hippos in the UK, and the new facilities will provide a modern and immersive experience for visitors, ensuring that the park remains at the forefront of animal conservation.
