Longleat’s Lead Carnivore Keeper, Caleb Hall, is set to tackle the gruelling Lewa Safari Marathon to raise vital funds for Tusk, a conservation charity dedicated to protecting threatened species across Africa.
Caleb, who has dedicated over 12 years to the Wiltshire Safari Park, will be running through the breathtaking Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Northern Kenya on 29th June. The marathon takes place within this UNESCO World Heritage site, home to over 70 animal species and more than 400 species of birds.
Renowned by Runner’s World as one of the world’s top ten ‘must-do’ marathons, the Lewa Safari Marathon is famed not only for its stunning vistas and the presence of wildlife but also for the challenging conditions, including searing heat and an altitude of up to 1,750 feet.
Caleb, 36, shared his passion for conservation: “Many of the species I’m fortunate to work with at Longleat are at risk of disappearing forever. Raising money for Tusk is crucial to me because I’m deeply committed to these animals. I want to ensure they are here for future generations to enjoy.”
Marking its 25th anniversary in 2024, the Lewa Safari Marathon is both a personal challenge for Caleb and a crucial event supporting conservation efforts throughout Kenya. He said, “I love caring for our animals, especially the lions, but if I can do something to help their wild counterparts, that’s exactly what I want to do.”
Organised by Longleat’s conservation partner Tusk and hosted by Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, the marathon is a significant event in the conservation calendar. This isn’t Caleb’s first marathon nor his first fundraising effort for Tusk. “I ran the London Marathon in 2016 for Tusk, and it was a fantastic experience. Running in the wilds of Lewa has always been a dream because you get to run in the footsteps of wild animals.”
Caleb’s rigorous training regime includes running three or four miles daily, gradually increasing to two 20-mile runs each week, predominantly around the scenic Longleat estate. “While I can’t replicate the heat or altitude of Lewa, I’ve been tackling Longleat’s hills and taking in the beautiful landscapes on our doorstep.”
Caleb aims to raise £3,000 for Tusk but hopes to exceed this target. “I have such a passion for the animals Tusk supports. Whether it’s lions, African painted dogs, hyenas, or cheetahs, I’m thrilled by the challenge and determined to help.”
For over 30 years, Tusk has championed conservation across Africa, focusing on combating poaching, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflict. By supporting local people and organisations, Tusk aims to mitigate these threats through resources and recognition.
