Longleat Keeper Achieves £3k Fundraising Milestone Ahead of Kenyan Safari Marathon

With just over a week remaining before taking on the daunting Lewa Safari Marathon in Kenya, Longleat’s lead carnivore keeper, Caleb, is already in a celebratory mood. The 36-year-old has successfully hit his £3,000 charity fundraising target, marking a significant milestone in his effort to support Tusk, a conservation charity dedicated to preserving Africa’s threatened species.

Caleb, who has been a member of the Longleat team for over 12 years said, “It is an honour to be able to run this marathon and raise money for Tusk,” Caleb shared. “I can’t believe I’m getting the opportunity to take on this challenge, and I’m so excited to not only raise vital funds for Tusk but also to run in the footsteps of these wild animals.”

The enthusiastic keeper has been committed to his training regime, running approximately 40 miles a week, including half-marathon distances on his days off. “I’m loving all the training I’ve been doing; in fact, I’m at a point now where I should be tapering off and resting before the event, but I’ve been enjoying it so much it’s been hard to stop!”

The Lewa Safari Marathon is renowned for its challenging course, set within the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Northern Kenya. The route traverses varied terrains and most of the course lies between 1600 and 1700 feet above sea level, adding to the physical demands of the marathon.

“While I’ve prepared for the distance as much as possible, the biggest challenge I’ll face is the environment. The altitude will immediately slow me down compared to my usual pace, and the changing surfaces will be tough on my knees. I’m hoping to cross the finish line within four and a half to five hours, but most importantly, I want to make everyone proud. I’m really grateful for everyone’s support for such a great charity.”

Tusk works tirelessly across the African continent to protect endangered species, whether by tackling poaching, addressing habitat loss, or educating local communities on coexisting with wildlife. Their mission ensures that future generations can enjoy these incredible animals.
