Teams from Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes South West recently joined forces with the Swindon Food Collective, lending a hand to the charity that’s become a lifeline for individuals and families facing hardship in the area. The six volunteers spent the day sorting, packing, and assembling essential food boxes at the charity’s warehouse in Westlea, ensuring vital supplies reach those most in need across Swindon and the surrounding area.
Swindon Food Collective, supported by just five part-time staff and over 100 dedicated volunteers, provided food for over 10,500 people last year – a quarter of whom were children. During the past year alone, the charity distributed an impressive 96 tonnes of food, equating to around 80,000 meals. In partnership with schools, medical staff, and social services, the charity ensures that food parcels reach families and individuals during critical times of need.
The effort from Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes goes beyond just a day of volunteering. The team kicked off an ongoing food drive on National Food Bank Day at the Wichelstowe development, with employees bringing non-perishable items to work. They plan to deliver their next donation to Swindon Food Collective soon, adding to the essential supplies needed to stock the charity’s distribution centres across the region.
Louise Ware, Sales Director for Barratt David Wilson Homes South West, was among the team that volunteered, noting the meaningful experience of supporting the local charity. “Knowing you’re making a tangible difference in the community we live in is incredibly rewarding,” she shared. “Swindon Food Collective’s work is vital in helping families through difficult times, and we’re pleased to support such a worthwhile cause.”
Cher Smith MBE, manager of the Swindon Food Collective, expressed her appreciation for the teams’ efforts: “We’re extremely grateful for the ongoing support. Volunteers are crucial to our operations, allowing us to keep up with demand, particularly during the busy winter season. With the help from Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes, we’re able to reach more people, making a genuine difference in our community.”
With food banks experiencing high demand, Swindon Food Collective’s Corporate Volunteering Programme offers local businesses a meaningful way to contribute, providing resources and support to maintain essential services for local residents in need.
