Local Heroes Hailed by Fire Service for Daring Rescues

Three members of the public have been awarded Chief Fire Officer’s Commendations for their selfless acts of courage.

At the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service’s annual awards ceremony, held at Tidworth Garrison Theatre on 18th April, Chief Fire Officer Ben Ansell presented the prestigious awards to Mandy Blackford, Liz Watts, and Edward Bryant.

Mandy and Liz, who work for Swindon Borough Council’s Homeline service, were commended for their heroic rescue of an elderly lady from her smoke-filled flat last November. The pair had been en route to the flat when they received a call from the resident, who had fallen and inadvertently set her carpet ablaze.

Arriving before firefighters and undeterred by the thick smoke, Mandy and Liz bravely entered the flat to help the lady escape.

Meanwhile, Edward Bryant of Wimborne was recognised for his daring rescue of a woman from the River Stour last June.

While walking his dog, Reggie, Edward noticed the pet’s agitation and soon discovered a woman struggling in the water. With the help of a neighbour and a ladder, Edward entered the river and guided the woman to safety, just as firefighters arrived on the scene.

CFO Ansell praised the trio, saying: “These commendations mark the appreciation of the Chief Fire Officer of meritorious conduct, that is above and beyond the call of duty, by staff, volunteers, partners or members of the public.

“Every year, I receive a number of nominations, and I was delighted to formally recognise Mandy, Liz and Edward for their swift and courageous actions. Without them, I have no doubt that two lives could have been lost.”
