Staff at Lawn Manor Academy in Swindon have returned to the classroom themselves – not to teach, but to learn how best to support the emotional wellbeing of their pupils and help prevent suicide among young people.
More than 100 members of staff have now completed the SPEAK and SPOT suicide prevention training, thanks to support from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). This comprehensive programme, delivered by national charity Papyrus, has equipped educators with the tools and confidence to open up life-saving conversations around suicide and mental health.
In addition, 20 staff and parents took part in the more intensive ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) course – a two-day training designed to develop practical intervention skills and strengthen the safety net for young people both inside and outside school.
Over the past academic year, Lawn Manor Academy has also extended its reach by offering a mix of online and face-to-face sessions to parents and carers. The aim has been to build a more informed and supportive school community, capable of recognising warning signs, challenging stigma, and offering early intervention when someone appears to be struggling.
Helga Maddock, Assistant Headteacher, Designated Safeguarding Lead, and SENDCO at the school, said: “This training has been incredibly important for us as a school community. Supporting the mental health of our pupils is one of our top priorities, and ensuring staff feel confident in having open, honest, and supportive conversations is a vital part of that. The impact of this training goes beyond the classroom; it helps to build a safer and more understanding community where young people know they are not alone.”
Lawn Manor Academy, part of the Ascend Learning Trust, has made mental health a key part of its pastoral care strategy. Their ongoing work with Papyrus highlights a strong commitment to creating not just a learning environment, but a safe space where pupils feel seen, heard, and supported.
