Lawn Manor Academy Pupil Hits the Mark with Gold Medal Success

As the nation prepares to mark National School Sports Week, one Swindon school is already celebrating thanks to the impressive sporting triumphs of its pupils. Lawn Manor Academy is proudly applauding Year 9 student Finley, who has brought home a gold medal from the Hampshire Open Shooting Competition.

Finley, aged 13, secured first place in his group while also smashing his previous personal best score by reaching an impressive 540 points, a notable improvement from his former best of 520. His dedication to the sport has been clear since he first took up shooting at the age of 10.

Training weekly at the Brown Jack Air Rifle Club, located at Swindon Supermarine Rugby Club, Finley has steadily developed his skills over the past three years. His hard work has taken him across the country to compete against both amateur and professional shooters, collecting an impressive array of medals along the way.

Speaking about his passion, Finley said: “I really enjoy shooting. It’s fun but also quite challenging. The further away the target is, the harder it becomes. You have to stay completely still and avoid fidgeting. I also enjoy learning how the equipment works, especially adjusting the sights to improve my aim.”

Russell Langdown, Head of School at Lawn Manor Academy, praised Finley’s achievement: “Finley’s commitment to his sport and how far he has progressed in such a short time is remarkable. We’re incredibly proud of him. At Lawn Manor Academy, we place great value on sport and physical education, recognising how it helps build confidence, focus, and resilience – all of which Finley has demonstrated.”

The school continues to encourage its pupils to explore a wide variety of sporting opportunities, both through its curriculum and extracurricular activities. Recent investments have seen the opening of a state-of-the-art gym available to pupils and staff, as well as providing introductory golf lessons. The school is equally committed to supporting grassroots initiatives, ensuring all pupils can participate, regardless of financial constraints.

Finley’s victory follows on from fellow pupil Bubacarr, who was recently signed by Chippenham Town football club, further highlighting the depth of sporting talent emerging from the school.

Lawn Manor Academy, part of the Ascend Learning Trust, continues to support its students in both academic and personal development, providing platforms for their talents to flourish. More information can be found at www.lawnmanor.org.
