Lawn Manor Academy has teamed up with Wiltshire Police to highlight the vital role of diversity in schools and communities. The partnership took centre stage at the official relaunch of the Wiltshire Ethnic Police Association (WEPA), where the school stood as a shining example of how embracing different cultures, backgrounds, and experiences can foster a sense of belonging and respect.
Lawn Manor Academy, where pupils speak at least 38 languages and many come from disadvantaged backgrounds, was invited to share its unique approach to celebrating differences. Assistant Headteacher Marek Koza addressed the audience of WEPA representatives, speaking passionately about how the school’s ethos of acceptance and kindness is helping to build a more harmonious school environment.
Since July 2023, Lawn Manor Academy has proudly held the title of School of Sanctuary, a recognition awarded to schools that play an active role in raising awareness about the challenges faced by people seeking safety. This accolade reflects the school’s dedication to cultivating compassion and understanding among its pupils.
Bringing energy and talent to the event, 20 of the school’s dancers performed the routine that recently secured them first place among South West schools in the Great Big Dance Off. Their performance was complemented by soulful renditions from Year 9 pupil Maka, who sang Ocean Eyes, and Year 8 pupil Kristian, who entertained with Escape (The Pina Colada Song).
Reflecting on the experience, Mr Koza remarked: “It was a real privilege to be invited to the Wiltshire Ethnic Police Association event and show them how we have become more collective and combined at Lawn Manor Academy by embracing cultures and our differences. We take every opportunity to celebrate our differences and successes through events like our Cultural Days and Refugee Week. Throughout every aspect of the school, we acknowledge that our unique backgrounds have helped us become the people we are today and that these experiences can help us achieve everything we want in the future.”
WEPA’s Claudia McKenzie and Elroy Rodrigues praised the school’s participation, saying: “The relaunch of WEPA will go down in Wiltshire Police history as one of the most vibrant, inspirational, emotive, and special events we have ever had. This was thanks to our incredible guests, including the students and staff of Lawn Manor Academy. Assistant Headteacher Mr Koza took the message of diversity to another level with his heartfelt talk, and the performances by the children were outstanding. The support they showed each other demonstrated the powerful sense of safety and encouragement within the school community.”
