Pupils at Kingfisher CE Academy in Wichelstowe have rounded off the summer term with a welcome surprise – shelves full of brand‑new books, gifted by two local housebuilders working alongside a Wiltshire‑based book partner.
The collection, supplied through Usborne Books and valued at nearly £1,000, is already making an impression on the 108 pupils across Reception to Year 4. Teachers at the school believe these additions will enrich lessons and give children the chance to explore stories and subjects that might otherwise have been out of reach.
Headteacher Sharon Bishop described the gesture as nothing short of a turning point for the school’s reading provision.
“This generous support allows us to bring in high‑quality titles that we simply could not have purchased through our budget alone,” she said. “The books cover every corner of our curriculum, sparking curiosity and nurturing a love of reading that will last far beyond the classroom.”
At a time when many schools are wrestling with tighter budgets, the gift could not have come at a better moment. Sharon added:
“With funding under pressure, external help like this makes a genuine difference. It means our pupils are not denied the resources they deserve, regardless of the financial challenges we face.”
The books were provided through a joint effort by David Wilson Redrow South West and Barratt Homes Bristol, who each wanted to do something lasting for the local community.

Richard Lawson, sales director for Barratt Homes Bristol, echoed those words: “If even one of these books sparks a new interest or inspires a child to read more, it will have been worth it. We’re pleased to support Kingfisher CE Academy in this way.”
The scheme was enhanced by Catherine Acton of Books by the River, an Independent Usborne Partner who boosted the value of the original donation by an impressive 60%. Catherine explained:
“As a teacher myself, I’ve seen how access to good books can open up a world of imagination and learning. It’s been a privilege to work with the school and the housebuilders to make this happen.”
