The exit poll has been released and there appears to be a serious risk that the Conservatives will lose their overall majority.
Labour have been forecast to gain 34 seats taking them to a total of 266 seats which will see Theresa May lose the 2017 General Election leaving the UK facing a hung parliament meaning no party has won enough seats in the election to have a majority in the House of Commons.
A hung parliament comes with many questions including: What happens if no party wins the General Election 2017? Who will be the prime minister?
Who will be the prime minister?
Theresa May. In a hung parliament, the incumbent PM stays in office – and lives in Downing Street – until it is decided who will attempt to form a new government.
How will that be decided?
According to the Cabinet Manual, the incumbent Prime Miniter is entitled to attempt to form a government and stay in office until Parliament meets. Parliament is expected to meet for the first time after the election on Tuesday, June 13.
What would happen if Mrs May resigned?
Jeremy Corbyn would then be first in line to have the chance to form a government which would put its Queen’s Speech to the Commons to see if he could win the support of a majority of MPs.
