Swindonians are being called upon to voice their opinions on the crucial matters that will shape the policing landscape for the upcoming year.
Police and Crime Commissioner, Philip Wilkinson, is seeking your input on the priorities that matter most to you and how the policing budget should be allocated.
The initiative, known as the Policing, Priorities and £s survey, was introduced earlier this month to engage residents in discussions about their preferences for policing services and the allocation of financial resources. A pivotal question posed to the community is whether households would be willing to invest more in policing through the police precept component of their council tax.
Mr. Wilkinson said it was his responsibility to ensure that Wiltshire Police possesses the necessary resources to combat and prevent crime effectively. The overarching goal is to enhance visibility, improve services, and provide prompt responses to emergency calls, be it through the 101 or 999 helplines. Additionally, the focus is on safeguarding vulnerable individuals and making Wiltshire a safer place for everyone.
Acknowledging the improvements already made by Wiltshire Police, Mr. Wilkinson recognised that the pace of progress may not be meeting the expectations outlined by residents and communities. Feedback from the public, coupled with strategic advice from the Force, serves as a crucial backdrop for the Commissioner’s budget planning for the upcoming year.
In his role as Police and Crime Commissioner, Mr. Wilkinson underscores the importance of evaluating the totality of policing and the police budget. Striking a balance between ensuring an efficient and effective police service and avoiding cuts to essential services is paramount, particularly at a time when increased investment is necessary to enhance service delivery.
Wiltshire Police’s budget is a product of collaboration between the Police and Crime Commissioner, Chief Constable, and input from residents and stakeholders. The budget comprises centralised government funding and local contributions through the police precept within the council tax.
Residents have until Monday, 29th January 2024, to participate in the survey and share their perspectives on Wiltshire’s policing prioritise by accessing the survey here: Survey Link.
