Head to Westonbirt This February Half-Term for Family Fun

Families looking to escape screens and routines this February half-term are being encouraged to head outdoors and enjoy a day among the trees at Westonbirt, The National Arboretum.

Run by Forestry England, Westonbirt offers an affordable way to shake off the winter blues, with fresh air, wide open spaces and early signs of spring beginning to appear across its world-famous tree collection.

Holly Firks-Matthews, Visitor Attraction Manager at Westonbirt, says the arboretum is the perfect place for families to reconnect with nature.

Your Holiday Starts Now

“There’s something truly magical about spending time at Westonbirt,” she said. “Whether you’re meeting much-loved storybook characters, trying new activities, or simply enjoying a family walk among the trees, we’re ready to welcome families this half-term for memorable, great-value adventures.”

Room on the Broom Trail

One of the highlights this half-term is the popular Room on the Broom trail, inspired by Julia Donaldson’s much-loved story. Families can follow the interactive route through the arboretum, taking part in themed activities, learning forest facts and enjoying plenty of hands-on fun along the way.

Young visitors are invited to help the Witch track down her missing hat, bow and wand, while collecting magical ingredients to complete her spell. Trail packs are available for £4, subject to availability.

The Beauty of Bark – Family Activity

From 17 to 19 February, between 10.30am and 3.30pm, families can drop into the Learning Centre for The Beauty of Bark, a guided children’s activity exploring the surprising variety of bark found across Westonbirt.

Children can take on the bark challenge, create bark clay tiles and enjoy a range of nature-inspired crafts to take home.

Play Areas and Inclusive Fun

Westonbirt’s natural play areas offer plenty of space for children to let off steam, with features designed to spark imagination using natural materials. Each play area includes accessible paths, inclusive equipment and sensory elements to help ensure everyone can join in.

Families can collect a ‘Young Explorers’ leaflet and map from the Welcome Building on arrival before heading off to play.

Gruffalo Sculptures and Family Walks

Visitors can also venture into the deep dark wood to spot the hand-carved Gruffalo and Gruffalo’s Child sculptures hidden among the trees — a firm favourite with younger visitors.

With a wide choice of paths and trails, Westonbirt is ideal for relaxed family walks, whether it’s a short stroll or a longer wander with a picnic. Every turn offers new views, hidden details and chances to discover the natural world together.

All half-term activities are included with standard admission, making Westonbirt a great-value day out for families this February.
