Haydon Wick Parish Council has proudly opened the much-anticipated revitalisation of the Trent Road Play Area, situated in the heart of Haydon Wick, North Swindon. The rejuvenated space, a testament to community collaboration and children’s creativity, promises hours of fun and adventure for youngsters of all abilities.
Along with play area specialists Wicksteed, the Council embarked on a journey to reimagine the play area, seeking inspiration directly from the minds of local children. Current Year 3 and Year 4 pupils from Greenmeadow Primary School, along with former Year 7 pupils from Nova Hreod Academy, were enlisted to lend their imaginations to the project. Their visions came to fruition in the form of an expanded play space adorned with interactive panels, a double-width slide, a basket swing, mushroom stepping stools, and other engaging features designed to cater to diverse play preferences.

The grand unveiling ceremony, attended by local councillors, staff, and eager children, brimmed with excitement as youngsters eagerly put the new equipment to the test. More than just a playground, the vibrant play area embodies the democratic ethos and communal camaraderie championed by Haydon Wick Parish Council.
Wicksteed, the renowned play area specialists, contributed merchandise to the event, while the Parish Council added to the festivities with sweets and bubbles, heightening the sense of joy and celebration.
Kate McKinnon, Head Teacher at Greenmeadow Primary School, expressed her delight at the involvement of pupils in the project, highlighting its educational and community-building significance. She remarked, “Having safe and exciting spaces to play locally is really important for our families, and we are fortunate to have the Trent Road Play Area within walking distance from our school and many homes.”
Councillor Steve Heyes, Chair of the Play Area Working Party, underscored the Council’s commitment to enhancing community play spaces in line with the Community Led Plan’s objectives saying, “The Council is really proud of its 24 play areas and is committed to improving these facilities, in line with the Community Led Plan’s objective, to make them inclusive and accessible. Working with local children and young people is a very rewarding part of this project and ensures that these play areas are future-proofed for years to come, with the children from today bringing their children along in the future like their parents are doing today.
“Play areas and open spaces are proven to be a huge part of the health and wellbeing of young people. The continued support and advice from Benjamin’s Smile Charity and Mums on a Mission is also paramount to ensure that the Council is getting the investment in the local assets right.”
With an open invitation extended to all local children, the Trent Road Play Area stands as a beacon of fun and togetherness, inviting youngsters to create cherished memories in a vibrant and welcoming environment.
