Futures Festival at Noremarsh Junior School: Celebrating All Things Careers

Royal Wootton Bassett’s Noremarsh Junior School has launched its highly anticipated Futures Festival with a stirring address from their CEO, Jane Coley.

The festival, a celebration of careers and the vast opportunities they hold, kicked off with a motivational talk that underscored the importance of envisioning future career paths from an early age.

The week-long event drew in a diverse array of participants, including parents, grandparents, staff, and local community members, all eager to share their professional and volunteering experiences with the young audience. The range of careers showcased was impressively varied, from assemblies and class discussions to hands-on demonstrations in STEM fields, hairdressing, animal husbandry (complete with a live horse re-shoeing demonstration), music, pottery, and more.

Year 6 students were particularly fortunate to engage with author Mark Ballabon, who conducted a creative writing workshop while also addressing the significant theme of transitioning to secondary school. This session not only honed their literary skills but also provided crucial insights into handling change and setting future goals.

Throughout the week, the focus remained steadfast on the essential skills required for future success. Children were introduced to the importance of attributes such as listening, problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership, in addition to their academic pursuits. These sessions highlighted that no matter the career path one chooses, these skills are indispensable.

Headteacher Hilary MacMeekin expressed her delight at the success of the event, saying, “This week has been inspirational for the children, and we are so grateful to everyone who came into school to hold sessions. Each session was great fun and the children have not stopped talking about the week. The week was aimed at getting children talking and thinking about their futures. It’s important for children to know that sometimes a hobby or love for something can be turned into a career. If you would like to volunteer for next year’s event, please do get in contact with our school.”

The Futures Festival has undeniably ignited a spark in the young minds of Noremarsh Junior School, encouraging them to dream big and pursue their passions with newfound vigour.
