As the nights draw in and temperatures drop, the kitchen can start to feel a little different. The bright, airy space that worked so well during the summer can suddenly benefit from a touch more warmth as autumn takes hold.
That doesn’t mean reaching for the paintbrush or planning a complete kitchen makeover. A few relatively small changes to lighting, colour and accessories can alter the feel of the room without leaving you with a seasonal look you’ll want to replace in a few months.
John Jacques, owner of Kitchen Makeovers in Swindon, shares four simple ways to give your kitchen an autumn refresh.
Change the light, not the kitchen
With daylight disappearing earlier, artificial lighting becomes increasingly important. A single bright overhead light can make a kitchen feel functional but rather stark, particularly in the evening.
Adding different layers of lighting can make the space feel warmer while keeping work surfaces properly illuminated. Under-cabinet lighting can provide focused light where it’s needed, while warmer-toned bulbs elsewhere can soften the overall atmosphere.
Try looking at the kitchen after dark and identifying areas that feel either too bright or too gloomy. Changing the lighting in those spots could make a surprising difference.
Bring in autumnal colour
Pumpkin spice may be everywhere at this time of year, but there’s no need to turn the kitchen orange.
