Fire Service Approves £76.4 Million Budget for 2025/26

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Authority has approved a budget of £76.4 million for the 2025-26 financial year. At a meeting held on 6th February, the Authority voted to increase its share of the council tax by £5 or 5.75% for properties in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, Dorset, Swindon, and Wiltshire. This decision means that the annual fire precept for Band D properties will rise to £91.95 from 1st April 2025.

Chief Fire Officer Andy Cole QFSM addressed the challenges of balancing the budget, noting that despite a strong history of savings and delivering value for money, future funding remains uncertain. “The financial landscape remains difficult, and while the £5 precept flexibility offered to all Fire & Rescue Services has provided some relief, we must continue to implement our Resourcing and Saving Programme (RSP) to ensure we provide the best possible service to our communities,” said Andy Cole.

Chair of the Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Authority, Cllr Paul Oatway QPM, highlighted that the increase in the council tax precept was a necessary step in the face of ongoing financial uncertainty. “While any rise in costs is difficult for residents, it’s important to note that our council tax rate remains below the national average. We firmly believe that the service we provide is excellent value for money,” Cllr Oatway said.
