Final Countdown for Icons of the Sky 2024 at Longleat

The iconic Icons of the Sky event at Longleat House in Wiltshire enters its final day today, with 30 hot air balloons set to put on a unique display of short “hops.”

Balloons shaped like elephants, coffee jars, UFOs, and parrots created a vibrant scene first thing this morning, despite the cancellation of the much-anticipated mass ascent due to wind conditions.

Daisy Mercedes, the event coordinator for Longleat’s flagship spectacle, explained that while safety concerns around weather conditions prevented the mass ascent, pilots ensured there was still plenty of airborne action for visitors to enjoy.

“It’s a weather-dependent event, and we always prioritise safety,” Daisy said. “The wind would have taken the balloons over military areas, so the mass ascent had to be put on hold. However, our pilots were eager to provide some activity, showcasing balloon inflations, burner techniques, and short hops from Longleat House down towards the lake.”

The weekend has not been short of thrilling moments. Saturday’s air display featured a mesmerising Tiger Moth flight, which is set to return for another show later today. Visitors can also look forward to Spitfire flights, wing walkers, and helicopter displays, all part of a packed afternoon programme.

Looking ahead, the team is keeping a close eye on the weather for the final planned events of the day. The forecast looks promising for the 5pm mass ascent and the dazzling Nightglow event at 8pm. In the meantime, Daisy highlighted that Longleat offers plenty of alternative attractions for guests to enjoy, ensuring there’s never a dull moment.
