Swindon-based Metric Group is celebrating a remarkable milestone as Terry Smith reaches his 50th year with the company.
Over his five decades in the parking sector, Terry has accumulated an astonishing two million miles, and he shows no signs of slowing down.
At 66 years old, Terry Smith from Huyton has dedicated half a century to Metric Group, previously known as Automaticket. His role involves maintaining and installing parking terminals across the UK, with a stint in America also on his impressive resume.
Reflecting on his extensive career, Terry remarked, “If you’d asked me as a boy where I’d be in 50 years, I doubt I would have guessed still working in the same job. It honestly doesn’t feel that long, though Friday afternoons might drag a bit. I genuinely enjoy what I do and have made many good friends over the years.”
Terry’s job has seen him travel extensively. He fondly remembers his first company car, a white Vauxhall Chevette, and estimates he has covered around two million miles throughout his career.
A memorable highlight for Terry was working in America around 15 years ago. He said, “I had the chance to work on our machines in Philadelphia. It was an eye-opening experience, working in a different culture and sharing knowledge. The Americans were incredibly welcoming. I also managed to visit Atlantic City and New York, which was fantastic.”
Despite his extensive career, Terry has no intention of retiring anytime soon. “I have a wonderful family and three grandchildren who keep me busy. I don’t really want to retire; I enjoy my work and, as long as I can physically manage it, I’ll keep going. The Metric Group team might have to kick me out eventually!” Terry joked.
