Fans could return for Swindon’s vital end of season game with Wigan

The remainder of the English football season, with the exception of any pilot events, will remain behind closed doors after the Government set out its road map to ease lockdown restrictions.

Sports venues will be able to open for upto 10,000 spectators, once the UK reaches step three of the four step plan, no earlier than May 17th – a week before the Premier League season concludes but two days after the FA Cup final.

However Swindon Town could play in front of fans for one more game this season, albeit an away game, as the EFL indicated its hope that both the Carabao Cup final on April 25th and the final round of League fixtures on May 8th and 9th could form part of the governments pilot programme.

If the pilot events were given the green light it could see Towns trip to Wigan on May 8th, a potential relegation decider, played in front of fans, more likely just home supporters.

In a statement, the EFL also said it hoped “as many fans as possible” would be able to attend the play-off finals at the end of May.

England’s football team will also be hoping to play in front of a full house at Wembley this summer s the roadmap indicates all restrictions on fans entering stadia could be lifted by June 21st, just twenty-four hours before Gareth Southgate’s team are due to play at Wembley in the rearranged Euro 2020 finals.

The semi-finals and the final of tournament are also due to be played at the national stadium on July 6th, 7th and 11th, with some rumours that the whole tournament could be moved to the UK due to the success in the vaccination programme.
