Swindon’s fire station will throw open its doors this Saturday (26 July) for a lively open day in support of the Fire Fighters Charity. Running from 11am until 4pm, the event promises a packed schedule with something for all ages.
Visitors will be treated to live demonstrations showing the skills used daily by crews, including hot oil fire simulations, technical rescues and road traffic collision extrication. The impressive aerial ladder platform will also be in action, giving a close‑up look at one of the service’s most dramatic pieces of kit.
Owing to the current hosepipe ban across Swindon, the usual water‑based activities will not be taking place. However, there remains plenty to see and do. First aid and CPR tips will be shared by experts from SWAS, while stalls will include a raffle and tombola brimming with prizes, the popular Fire Service Store and a range of refreshments.
A highlight for many will be the display of vintage emergency vehicles, offering a glimpse into how firefighting has evolved over the years. Younger visitors can enjoy a bouncy castle, and Swindon Town FC’s Academy will be on hand to run a penalty shoot‑out challenge.
Firefighter Lee Smitten, one of the organisers, said: “We’re so thankful to all the sponsors, businesses and individuals who have donated prizes and refreshments. This open day is designed to be enjoyed by the whole family, and most of the activities are free. We’ve seen brilliant turnouts in previous years and we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone again on Saturday.”
Those planning to attend are asked to use public transport where possible, as there will be no parking on site. Nearby public car parks are available for those who need to drive.
