Empowering Swindon Parent Carers: Free Event Highlights Support on Carers Rights Day

Parents in Swindon providing care for children under 18 with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities are invited to attend a complimentary event organised by Swindon Carers Centre.

Taking place at Swindon Town Football Club on Friday, November 24th, 2023, from 10 am to 1:30 pm, the event aims to inform and support parents by showcasing available services from key organisations and charities.

This initiative aligns with Carers Rights Day, a national event dedicated to ensuring unpaid carers are well-informed about their rights, available support, and raising awareness of the needs of carers.

Susanna Jones, Chief Executive Officer at Swindon Carers Centre, highlighted the significance of recognising parent carers: “Parents caring for children with additional needs often don’t perceive themselves as ‘carers.’ Registering as a parent carer opens up opportunities for additional support, including financial benefits and the chance to participate in activities for respite, allowing them to lead a healthy and fulfilling life alongside their caregiving responsibilities.”

The Carers Rights Day event promises valuable insights, with presentations from key decision-makers in health and social care. The Question and Answer panel will feature the participation of Swindon MPs Sir Robert Buckland and Justin Tomlinson. The marketplace will host stallholders from various organisations and charities, providing a wealth of information and resources.

Parent carers Anna Bird and Louise Ward from Mums on a Mission Swindon expressed their enthusiasm for sharing their experiences: “Parenting children with complex needs can be overwhelming, but it truly is the best job in the world because our children are incredible. We want people to understand the challenges we face dealing with multiple agencies and appointments. We also want other parent carers to know they’re not alone and encourage them to attend this fantastic event to discover available support and connect with like-minded individuals.”
