An 89-year-old man has been given a suspended prison sentence and banned from driving after running a red light and seriously injuring two children at a pedestrian crossing in Swindon.
Harold Small, of Corsham Road, Penhill, was sentenced at Swindon Crown Court on 17 February after admitting careless driving at an earlier hearing.
He received a 22-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and was disqualified from driving for a year.
The court heard that on 11 December 2023, two six-year-old schoolboys were using the traffic light-controlled crossing on Beechcroft Road when Small drove through a red light and struck them.
One child suffered a fractured arm, while the other was left with cuts and bruising.
The mother of one of the boys described the long-lasting impact of the incident on her family.
“This incident has changed our lives. I wouldn’t wish the effects it has had on us on my worst enemy,” she said.
The other boy’s mother added: “The boys stepped into the road and my whole life changed.”
DC Alex Way, from Wiltshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Team, said the case had deeply affected everyone involved.
“I know this incident has had a lasting effect on all those involved, both physically and emotionally. I am pleased that today has brought some justice for the families and will hopefully prevent further victims.
“This case is a stark reminder to all drivers to pay closer attention to their driving, especially around schools where young children are using the roads and pathways.”
Police are urging anyone who witnesses dangerous or careless driving to report it by calling 101, or 999 in an emergency.
