Samuel Kevis, 30, of Glanrhyd Street, Aberdare has been handed a driving disqualification of more than 3 years at Swindon Magistrates Court.
Kevis was involved in an accident at around 2.40 am on February 13th when he lost control of his Renault Clio on the motorway. The vehicle crossed all three lanes, colliding with the central reservation. Subsequently, Kevis abandoned the scene, only to be apprehended while walking on the hard shoulder on the opposite side of the motorway.
After blowing a reading of 76 at the roadside, further analysis through a blood sample uncovered 153 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, well beyond the legal limit of 80 micrograms.
In addition to the driving disqualification, Kevis was ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work and pay £1000 in costs.
Roads Policing Officer Craig Beales expressed relief that no severe injuries resulted from the collision saying “Kevis’ actions were both selfish and reckless and put other road users at risk.
Beales commented, “This case just proves exactly why we have stepped up our road safety campaign this year trying to educate drivers on the importance of road safety and the fatal five offences which are the main contributing factors to serious or fatal collisions on our roads.”
Drink driving is a prominent among the “fatal five,” and as the festive season approaches, the Roads Policing Unit (RPU) is intensifying patrols.
Collaborating with partner agencies from the Road Safety Partnership, the RPU aims to target those who flout the law and endanger lives on the road. Be responsible, plan your journey, and refrain from driving under the influence.
