Pickleball dubbed the fastest-growing sport in the world, takes the spotlight this April as it celebrates National Pickleball Month. With curiosity piqued and a desire to explore this burgeoning activity, I ventured to an evening session in Swindon to uncover the allure behind its rising popularity.
Originating in America in 1965, Pickleball was born out of necessity when three dads sought an alternative to badminton due to equipment constraints. Nearly six decades later, with over 30 million players in the US alone, the sport has evolved into a unique blend of badminton, table tennis, and tennis. Players engage in fast-paced rallies, aiming to score 11 points on their serve to clinch victory.
While the UK boasts an estimated 7,000 players, Pickleball England has set its sights on reaching 25,000 members by 2025, illustrating the growing appetite for this dynamic sport.
Shaun Jones, the organiser of Swindon Pickleball, kickstarted the Monday socials at Delta Tennis Centre after a chance encounter with the sport on a Greek cruise. Reflecting on his journey, Shaun shared, “I was chatting with another passenger over a beer, and the topic of sports came up. He was an avid pickleballer, but I had no clue what it was. A year later, I stumbled upon a local game advertisement and decided to give it a try. I was immediately hooked!”
What began as an individual curiosity soon blossomed into a thriving community as Shaun introduced friends and family to the sport. Today, the Monday session at Delta Tennis Centre attracts 30-40 players weekly, drawn by the welcoming atmosphere and the intricate dynamics of the game.
The camaraderie amongst players was palpable, with the relaxed ambiance punctuated by moments of playful confusion, such as when Shaun queried the score, only to receive the jovial response of ‘we don’t know.’
Swindon Pickleball embodies more than just a sport; it represents a community united by a passion for camaraderie, competition, and fun. Join us at Delta Tennis Centre and discover the joy of Pickleball for yourself!
