Local man Melvin Camden, 68, has accomplished a truly daring feat: abseiling down a cliff face, all while living with terminal lung cancer.
Despite having only one lung, Melvin has shown remarkable determination in raising funds for Prospect Hospice, a charity close to his heart.
Speaking about his motivations, Melvin shared, : “I wanted to raise money for Prospect Hospice, the charity that will provide care and support for me and my family when the time comes. Prospect is a fantastic charity, and I know they will be there for me and my family when we need them most. I hope that my abseil will inspire others to join me in supporting their vital work.”
Melvin’s children, Nathan and Emma, set up a JustGiving page to support his fundraising efforts, which have already brought in an impressive £650.
Nathan expressed his admiration for his father, saying, “We are incredibly proud of our dad for taking on this challenge. He is an inspiration to us all.”
The family’s dedication doesn’t stop there. Nathan and Emma have ambitious plans to continue raising funds for Prospect Hospice. They are set to participate in the Swindon Half Marathon in September and are organising a virtual walk from Land’s End to John O’Groats this summer. The journey will culminate at the front of Prospect Hospice in Wroughton, with Melvin joining for the final stretch, depending on his health.
Jeremy Lune, CEO of Prospect Hospice, commended Melvin’s incredible efforts. He remarked, : “Melvin’s story is a wonderful example of the incredible community spirit that surrounds the hospice. His courage and determination are an inspiration to us all. We are incredibly grateful for his support and for the support of everyone who has donated. Melvin’s adventure shows us all that life is there for living. We all need to be more Melvin!”
Melvin’s journey is a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit. His courage, love for his family, and commitment to helping others shine brightly, proving that even in the face of adversity, there is always room for hope and kindness.
