In a bid to address mounting concerns over water infrastructure, Swindon Borough Council‘s Scrutiny Committee is set to grill Thames Water on a series of performance-related issues, including burst water mains, flooding incidents, and sewage discharge into local waterways.
Recent disruptions caused by burst water mains at Mead Way and Wootton Bassett Road, resulting in road closures and inconvenience to residents and motorists, have prompted councillors to demand answers from Thames Water. The recurrence of such incidents has raised questions about the adequacy of maintenance and investment in Swindon’s water network over the years.
Scrutiny Committee member, Councillor Neil Hopkins, said the water company needed to be held accountable and explain what it is doing to improve its water and sewage network in Swindon.
“Thames Water have caused misery to local residents over the last few days with the recent burst water mains and it is becoming a recurring theme. The water main at Mead Way has burst three times. It is clear the Borough’s water network has not had the necessary maintenance and investment over many years and we want Thames Water to tell us what it is doing to tackle the problem.”
Chair of the Scrutiny Committee, Councillor Dale Heenan, highlighted the committee’s authority to compel utility companies to address concerns, noting the recent surge in issues like flooding and burst pipes. With cross-party support, the committee has invoked statutory powers to summon Thames Water to the first meeting of the Council year on June 17th. Councillor Heenan emphasised the importance of obtaining assurances and resolutions from Thames Water regarding the ongoing challenges faced by Swindon residents.
Councillor Jim Robbins, Leader of Swindon Borough Council, echoed the sentiment, affirming the council’s commitment to holding Thames Water accountable for the welfare of residents. He stressed the urgency of resolving issues to avoid further disruptions and costly delays, particularly concerning the Fleming Way improvement scheme.
The Scrutiny Committee’s proactive stance reflects a collective effort to ensure transparency and address pressing concerns, signalling a firm resolve to safeguard the interests of Swindon residents.
