Swindon Borough Council’s Leader, Councillor Jim Robbins, has welcomed a significant boost to help vulnerable residents this winter as the cost of living crisis continues to bite. The Government has confirmed an extension of the Household Support Fund, providing an additional £1.5 million to support local households struggling with the rising costs of food, energy, and essential living expenses.
This funding, allocated by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), will see the scheme extended for a further six months, offering much-needed help until March 2024. Councillor Robbins hailed the move as critical support for the town’s most vulnerable during what is expected to be a challenging winter.
The Household Support Fund will be used to provide assistance to residents most in need, with a particular focus on low-income pensioners who are likely to feel the sharpest impact of increased energy bills following the recent rise in the energy price cap. While full details are yet to be finalised, councillors are expected to recommend that a portion of the funds be targeted at helping this group through the winter months.
Councillor Robbins explained, “I’m really grateful to the Government for extending the Household Support Fund. This will allow us to continue supporting those Swindon households who are facing serious financial challenges, especially as winter approaches.”
He added, “We will be looking to allocate around £400,000 specifically to people who fall just above the Pension Credit cut-off, to ensure they receive help with their energy costs.”
Once the final distribution plan is agreed upon, a portion of the funding will be allocated directly to eligible households. The remainder will be distributed to local partner organisations who will support residents with food and energy bill assistance.
Helping Hands for Pensioners
As part of the Council’s ongoing support, residents who may qualify for Pension Credit are being urged to check their eligibility. A successful application for Pension Credit not only provides financial assistance but also unlocks access to the Government’s Winter Fuel Payment. This is an annual tax-free grant of £200 for those under 80, or £300 for those over 80, to help with heating costs.
For those who require assistance in applying for Pension Credit, Citizens Advice Swindon is available to help with the process.
The Council has already provided significant help to struggling families through the Household Support Fund this year. Between April and August, Swindon Borough Council distributed £1.35 million, including 28,200 food vouchers to families with children during school holidays. This initiative supported over 9,600 children across the borough, with £1.1 million of the funding specifically allocated to helping families with children.
Councillor Robbins emphasised, “We’ve been working closely with our MPs and the wider community to ensure we identify the right people who need support. It’s essential we get this right to help those most affected.”
Residents who believe they may be eligible for the next round of funding are encouraged to keep an eye on the Council’s website for more information. The application process is expected to open in November, with full details available online by searching ‘Household Support Fund.’
