Wichelstowe, is poised for a significant expansion as work is set to commence on the next phase. This development, spanning the next 15 years, aims to deliver thousands of much-needed homes, with the latest phase set to provide 616 new residences.
Following a recent decision by Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet to transfer the land, construction will soon begin on the new homes, expanding the Canalside, Wichel Fields, Orchards Rise, and Orchards View areas. The new housing will range from one-bedroom apartments to five-bedroom detached properties. Importantly, 80 of these homes will be designated for shared ownership or affordable rent, provided through an affordable housing provider.
A key focus of the Wichelstowe development is sustainability. The new homes will be built to the latest standards, incorporating modern building techniques such as timber frame construction and energy-generating features like photovoltaic panels. Every home will also come equipped with an electric car charging point as standard. The development is committed to supporting local wildlife, with hundreds of swift bricks, bat boxes, and hedgehog highways integrated into the new homes, along with the planting of over 500 street trees.
The new phase will also include essential infrastructure such as new highways and the extension of the canal, alongside landscaped areas featuring new paths and play areas.
Wichelstowe, a collaboration between Barratt Homes, David Wilson Homes, and Swindon Borough Council, will eventually encompass 3,000 new homes, new schools, and community facilities. The 250-hectare site on the southern edge of Swindon will also include extensive open spaces, nature conservation areas, playing pitches, and allotments.
Councillor Kevin Small, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance, expressed his enthusiasm for the development: “We’re really pleased to announce the latest milestone at Wichelstowe which marks a significant step towards addressing Swindon’s housing needs for the long term.”
He added, “We look forward to working in partnership with Barratt David Wilson Homes to deliver not only more housing but also expansive public green spaces and dedicated areas for nature conservation. This endeavour isn’t just about construction; it’s about nurturing a community and preserving our natural environment for generations to come.”
Russell Glimstead, Regional Managing Director (West Region), Barratt Developments PLC and Wichelstowe LLP Board Chair, shared his excitement: “This is yet another milestone moment for Wichelstowe which has quickly become renowned for providing quality homes in sustainable neighbourhoods that enhance residents’ quality of life. We’re excited to bring our ambitious, exciting visions to life and look forward to commencing work at the site.”
