Community Spirit Lights Up South Swindon

With many Christmas kick-offs postponed due to Storm Bert, South Swindon still managed to get the festive season underway with a series of Christmas Tree Light Switch On events hosted by the Parish Council last week.

The festivities commenced on Tuesday, 19th November, at Broadgreen Community Centre. Guests were treated to delightful performances by Rhythmix Goa, St Luke’s Choir, and the dance group Sizzling Stars, filling the air with Christmas cheer.

Inside the community centre, bustling stalls and food vendors created a lively atmosphere, while Santa Claus himself made a special appearance, handing out treats to delighted children.

On Wednesday, Cavendish Square was transformed into a festive wonderland. Natasha Bushnell and the Parish Youth Club delivered brilliant musical performances, while the Youth Club’s tombola drew eager participants. Mazza’s Munchies and Lizzy Bakes kept appetites satisfied, and Swindon’s resident stiltwalker brought an extra element of fun and spectacle to the evening.

The celebrations culminated on Thursday at the Badbury Park Community Hub, where local businesses such as Lizzy Bakes, Stockers Street Food, and Badbury Park Pizzeria added a festival vibe with their culinary offerings. Fandangos Bar served festive drinks for the grown-ups, while Santa delighted children with a captivating story time session.

The Christmas trees, which are now standing proudly in Broadgreen, Cavendish Square, and Badbury Park, will remain lit until early January, offering a festive glow for all to enjoy throughout the Christmas period.

Cllr Linda Kasmaty, Chair of Leisure, Environment & Amenities, praised the events, saying: “It’s fantastic to see so many families come out and enjoy the switch on events, supporting local performers and businesses and creating such a festive atmosphere. We’d like to thank all our local performers, vendors, and community groups who helped make these events so memorable.”

Mayor of Swindon, Cllr Imtiyaz Shaikh, attended all three evenings and expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the community:
“I was truly honoured to have attended the three wonderful Christmas light switch-on events hosted by South Swindon Parish Council. These occasions showcase the heart and spirit of our community, bringing people together to celebrate the festive season.

“I want to sincerely thank the residents and local businesses for their incredible support and enthusiasm, which make these events so special. Your contributions and community spirit light up Swindon just as brightly as the beautiful displays we’ve switched on. Wishing everyone a joyful and peaceful holiday season!”

Weather allowing, Swindon Town Centre and the Old Town Christmas lights will be switched on this weekend after being postponed due to the high wind and rain this past weekend.
