A heartwarming Christmas story unfolded in Swindon as a diabetic Husky, Tinx, regained her sight after battling blinding cataracts.
The grateful owners celebrated what they called a Christmas ‘miracle’ brought to them by the skilled veterinarians at Swindon-based Eastcott Veterinary Referrals.

Eight-year-old Tinx, faced vision challenges due to diabetes mellitus, leading to the formation of diabetic cataracts. The impact was evident as Tinx struggled with walking, frequently tripping, and colliding with objects as her eyesight rapidly declined.
The specific type of diabetic cataracts affecting Tinx had the potential to become inoperable, risking permanent blindness if not addressed promptly. The expert surgeons at Linnaeus-owned Eastcott Veterinary Referrals, Swindon, identified the severity of the condition and performed a life-changing operation, delivering the perfect festive gift to Tinx and her overjoyed owners.
Katherine Manchip, a European specialist in veterinary ophthalmology, led the surgical intervention, enabling Tinx to resume her playful activities, from running in the garden to relishing beach trips with her family.
Katherine said: “Tinx’s vision was severely impaired by her diabetic cataracts and up to 80 per cent of dogs diagnosed with diabetes mellitus will develop these cataracts.
“If left untreated, these cataracts can cause inflammation within the eye and lead to glaucoma, which is blinding and painful. If left too long then it’s impossible to operate on the eyes, leading to a permanent loss of eyesight.
“It’s fantastic that Tinx is back to her energetic self and making the most of her restored vision, possibly with the prospect of seeing some snow at this time of year, which I’m sure she would make the most of.”

Tinx’s owner, Heather Sams from Wokingham in Berkshire, expressed her initial distress witnessing Tinx’s sight deterioration. However, with Katherine’s expertise and reassurance, they swiftly opted for surgery. The successful removal of cataracts transformed Tinx into a revitalised companion, no longer hindered by vision impairment.
Heather Sams expressed her gratitude to Katherine and the team saying, “for me, this is a complete miracle to have my friend back to normal. I’d like to give a special thanks to Katherine and Fiona Strange, who also treated Tinx.”
