Christ Church in Old Town is preparing to welcome more than 100 people for a special Christmas Day dinner, offering food, friendship and company to those who might otherwise spend the day alone.
While Christmas is a time for families and friends to come together, not everyone has someone to share the occasion with. For some Swindon residents, 25 December can be one of the loneliest days of the year.
Christ Church is hoping to make a difference once again by opening its Community Centre for a festive gathering on Friday 25 December, from 12 noon until 3.30pm.
Guests will be treated to a traditional three-course Christmas dinner, with carol singing, conversation and the chance to watch the King’s Christmas Day broadcast together.
The annual event is expected to welcome more than 100 people, providing an opportunity for residents to meet others, make new friends and enjoy the celebrations in a welcoming setting.
For those unable to leave their homes, the church will also arrange for Christmas meals to be delivered, ensuring housebound residents are not forgotten.
Chris Smith, Christ Church Site Operations Manager, said: “Christmas can be a difficult time for people who are on their own, and we want everyone to know that they are welcome here. Our Christmas Day Dinner is about much more than providing a meal. It’s about creating a place where people can feel included, enjoy good company and share in the joy of Christmas.
“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helps make this event possible, and we are looking forward to welcoming our guests for another special day.”
Volunteers needed to help make Christmas special
With preparations for the big day already taking shape, organisers are hoping a few more Swindon residents will give up some of their Christmas Day to lend a hand.
There are several ways to get involved, from preparing and cooking the festive meal to serving food and drinks, clearing tables and helping with the washing up.
Volunteer drivers are also particularly welcome, with transport needed to collect guests who may struggle to reach the Community Centre independently and return them home afterwards.
Even a few hours of help could make a difference, allowing the team to ensure everyone attending receives a warm welcome and an enjoyable Christmas.
How to book a place at the Christmas Day dinner
The dinner takes place at Christ Church Community Centre in Old Town, Swindon, on Friday 25 December 2026, between 12 noon and 3.30pm.
Places are limited, and anyone wishing to attend is encouraged to reserve their seat in advance.
A donation of £10 per person is suggested to help support the event, although the church has made clear that nobody will be turned away because they cannot afford to contribute.
Anyone interested in attending, volunteering or helping with transport can contact Chris Smith and the Christ Church team.

Christ Church has long played a part in bringing people together in Old Town, with its Community Centre hosting activities and events throughout the year.
The Christmas Day dinner is another opportunity for the church and its volunteers to reach people who may be feeling isolated and remind them that there is somewhere to go and someone to share Christmas with.
For anyone facing Christmas Day alone this year, a seat at the table and some friendly company could make all the difference.
