By this point Maslen wasn’t in the driving seat but admitted he had been and panicked because he knew he was disqualified from driving,

As well as this suspended prison sentence Maslen was ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work, carry out up to 20 days of rehabilitation activity, to pay a £154 surcharge and £620 Crown Prosecution Service costs.

PC Luke Hobbs, of the Roads Policing Unit, said: “Maslen tried to evade police by driving away from us, and swapped positions with his passenger.

“Road safety is always a priority but this month the force is further promoting the importance of the consequences of the fatal five offences following a rise in serious injury and fatal collisions, as well as urging drivers to plan their journey home after a night out.
