Fearless fundraisers from across Swindon have helped raise more than £14,000 for local domestic abuse charity Society Without Abuse (SWA) by braving the flames in the charity’s inspiring Firewalk challenge.
The event, held at Swindon Cricket Club, brought together 30 courageous participants who first walked barefoot over broken glass before taking on a 15-foot stretch of glowing embers — a powerful symbol of the journey many survivors of domestic abuse face, moving from fear and uncertainty to courage and empowerment.
So far, £14,008.08 has been raised, with donations still coming in. Much of the total was match-funded by The Big Give’s Women and Girls Fund, meaning the money will go directly towards SWA’s recovery programmes for adult and child victims of domestic abuse.
Natasha Moyles, Operations Manager at Society Without Abuse, said:
“Watching each person take those first hesitant steps, then cross the coals with strength and determination, was truly inspiring. The Firewalk perfectly captured the emotional journey of survivors, from fear to empowerment.
We’re so grateful to everyone who participated, donated, and supported this event. Thanks to match funding from The Big Give, the first £5,000 raised was doubled, helping us directly support those rebuilding their lives free from abuse. It will also fund our work with colleges and schools across the area, educating young people about healthy relationships and preventing abuse before it starts.”
The event was made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of Gel Studios and the continued support of Swindon Cricket Club and its members. Local food vendors Gourmet58, Samosas2go, and The Sugar Shack kept participants and spectators fuelled throughout the evening, adding to the uplifting community atmosphere.
Natasha added:
“Our sponsors, Gel Studios, and our hosts at Swindon Cricket Club made a world of difference to the success of the evening. The food and community spirit created such a warm, supportive atmosphere — a true example of Swindon coming together for an important cause.”
